What is OPAM - OPAM
OPAM (Opera per la Promozione dell'Alfabetizzazione nel Mondo),  Institution for the Promotion of the Literacy in the World, is a Christian inspired Association recognized as a NGO (non-governmental organization), and an ONLUS (socially useful, non-profit organization).
OPAM was founded in 1972 by Don Carlo Muratore, missionary and co-founder of Caritas: after 15 years in Venezuela , on his return to Italy, he founded OPAM, being utterly convinced that education is the key to any kind of development.

To achieve its goals, OPAM operates financing literacy microprojects, sponsorships and school twinnings. In 39 years OPAM completed more then 3500 projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and contributed to the education and professional training of million children, young men and women, presently living free from the ignorance slavery and promoting development.

In 2010 OPAM promoted 66 projects in 3 continents: 42 in Africa, 15 in Asia and 9 in Latin America corresponding to € 430,000; OPAM activated 2,220 sponsorships: 1,117 in Africa, 612 in Asia and 491 in Latin America, Nicaragua and Mexico. At the end of 2010 13 twinnings were active among Italian schools and schools in Developing Countries to promote solidarity. The average annual  budget is about € 1 million.
